LandCruiser Full-Floater Rear Axle Disc Brake Conversion Overview
This is a basic overview of the fitting. The calipers are from an early-to-mid 90's Nissan Maxima and the brackets have been custom developed to suit. The discs are early Hilux solid axle solid rotors (LN / RN / YN 65 model if you are searching), and if you have new brake pads you'll need .5mm skimmed from each side of the rotor before fitting.
Disc machined and fitted (disc rotor inner hole needs to be enlarged to fit over the hub, and the hub flange needs to be turned down to fit inside the rotor)
New adapting brake lines with Toyota female thread at one end and Nissan banjo fitting at the other
Hub fitted with cut-down backing plate, modified Hilux dust seal (same diameter as the Cruiser one but easier to get and about 1/100th of the price! Just re-drill and modify to suit)
Scrape the back of the axle flange clean of any paint and other contaminants so the bracket sits fully flush
Mount the bracket and slip the bolts through
Mount the caliper (LH caliper on the RH side and vice-versa - this ensures the bleed nipples are in the right place)
Tack a brake line mount somewhere convenient and plumb up the caliper (if you don't have a spare mount just make something to tie the connection to the axle somehow - nylon P-clips are a good option)
Its hard to see, but I cut the handbrake actuating arm from the old drum-brake setup and welded it to the actuator on the caliper... all done in-situ to get the positioning right for the handbrake cable
